Bordering the Bay: Remediation Project Near Sensitive Environment

ENTACT was engaged to perform remediation and geotechnical construction services at this NPL Superfund site, addressing contaminants across 150 acres formerly occupied by a waste oil recovery facility. The site featured numerous aboveground storage tanks, two API separators, a large, elevated sludge impoundment, and a small cemetery, bordered by a bay, a closed waste disposal site, a city landfill, and undeveloped marsh and wetlands. To optimize the project timeline, ENTACT implemented a phased approach that allowed construction to proceed concurrently with design submittals and approvals. Throughout the project, ENTACT handled more than 1.1 million cubic yards of material, ensuring comprehensive remediation of the site. At the conclusion of the project, ENTACT had:

  • Demolished aboveground tanks, buildings, process vessels, piping, and other structures
  • Installed a 3,300-linear-foot perimeter soil-bentonite slurry wall
  • Installed a vacuum well-point dewatering system
  • Constructed a 30-acre cell for containment and management of contaminated materials
  • Excavated more than 266,000 cubic yards of impacted soils and rubble
  • Performed in-situ solidification of 310,000 cubic yards of subsurface source material and sludge
  • Backfilled the sludge pit and excavated areas with clean fill
  • Imported and placed more than 60,000 tons of riprap for shoreline protection along the bay
