Remediation of Impacted River Sediment Completed in 3.5 Months

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy contracted with White Lake Dock & Dredge, a division of ENTACT, to provide dredging and remedial capping services in the Manistique River. This project focused on addressing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination in river sediments. This comprehensive remediation effort effectively addressed PCB contamination, ensuring the protection of the river ecosystem and compliance with regulatory requirements. On this project, ENTACT:

  • Dredged 42,000 cubic yards of PCB-impacted sediment, including 1,100 cubic yards classified as Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) hazardous material
  • Installed 12,000 cubic yards of granulated activated carbon (GAC)-sand blended material to create an activated carbon remedial cap
  • Dewatered and solidified all dredged materials with Portland cement and other reagents in lined dewatering pits before disposal
  • Disposed of all TSCA hazardous waste at a permitted out-of-state landfill
  • Managed the disposal of more than 2,000 truckloads of material during a span of three months
