Retired Coal-Fired Power Plant Site Transformed into Master Planned Industrial Park

ENTACT completed comprehensive soil and groundwater remediation activities at a former coal-fired power generating station contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), chromium ore process residue (COPR), and extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (EPH). These contaminants were present at levels exceeding cleanup criteria, necessitating remediation for future site development. Throughout this project, ENTACT:

  • Excavated, segregated, and characterized hazardous (TSCA and RCRA) and non-hazardous soil for off-site treatment and disposal
  • Installed 7,500 square feet of a steel sheet pile cutoff wall using an ABI MobilRam pile driving rig around areas impacted by PCB contamination
  • Placed approved onsite fill and imported certified clean fill material post-excavation
  • Identified additional contamination with technologically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive material (TENORM) at ground surface to approximately five feet below ground, underlain by EPH-impacted soil down to 23 feet below ground surface
  • Collaborated with the engineer and developer to implement a cost-effective remedy for the newly identified TENORM area
  • Excavated, stockpiled, and characterized TENORM
  • Performed in-situ stabilization of underlying EPH soil
  • Replaced TENORM onsite or disposed of off-site based on characterization results
